Snow, a young white rat, skittered in zig-zags across the thin pathway of the back alley. The claws on her tiny paws scratched against the stone floor. She swiftly turned, and leaped for a near vine creeping across the stone sides of the path. She climbed up to the top of the wall and paused. She looked up at the moon and took a deep breath… then, quickly glanced around, and shot off down the top of the wall. The alley ended at a bridge that arched over this thin path. Snow leaped for the bridge, landed safely, and scattered across it to the field waiting beyond.

Snow scurried across the field, the grass tickling her underside as she ran. She moved as silently as she could, her eyes and ears open and alert for danger. Suddenly a shriek came from above, and a winged shadow blotted out the moon. Snow zigzagged wildly, her tiny heart beating in her chest, waiting for the powerful claws to pierce her soft furry body....
An eerie light flickered above her, and with another more terrible shriek, the winged shadow veered off. Snow froze, gasping and confused. Before she could make sense of the situation, a gloved hand scooped her up, and she found herself looking into two glowing yellow eyes.
"Hello, little one," Melessendra said, smiling and stroking Snow's soft fur. "That was a close call, wasn't it?" She carefully set the rat on her shoulder, and picked up her fishing rod once more. "You can stay for a while, if you like," she explained, casting the rod into the dark water, "but I hope you like fish."
