The rain came down steadily as did the young blood elf’s tears. Her father’s body lay on the hearth wrapped in a traditional death shroud. Her mother hadn’t cried, hadn’t spoken; she hadn’t even made a sound. The elf sniffled and quickly wiped her tears as she heard footsteps shuffling behind her. Her sister’s small voice seemed to echo around her.
“Thillion, I can’t sleep, and I can’t find Mama…” Thillion stood and went to her younger sister. “It will be okay. I will lay with you until you fall asleep.” Thillion walked with Kyrissia to her room and they lay down. Not moments later, both girls were fast asleep.
A few hours later, Thillion woke suddenly. Kyrissia was deep asleep. Thillion wanted to go back to sleep. She had been dreaming of her father, but something would not let her close her eyes again. Slipping out of the bed, Thillion wandered out of the room.
She cast a mournful glance at her father’s body and moved to the window. Something caught her eye, and Thillion took another look. Her mother was walking outside, in the slow-falling rain, with no clothes on. Thillion gasped softly and ran to get her mother’s cloak.
Suddenly a scream pierced the pure night. Terrified for her mother, Thillion grabbed the cloak and scrambled towards the door. She flung the door open just in time to watch her mother raise her arms to the sky, throw her head back and let out a heart-breaking, bone-chilling shriek.
Thillion dropped the cloak and cover her ears. Tears slowly slid down the young elf’s cheeks as her mother cursed the Gods over and over, for taking the one man that ever loved her. Slowly the grieving elf fell to her knees. Crying softly, Thillion grabbed the cloak and ran to her mother.
“Mama, please!” the youngling cried as she draped the cloak over her mother’s body, “Please, you’re going to wake Kyrissia…” She dropped to her knees in front of her mother. The rain began to come down harder, soaking the crying elves.
“Mama, we have to go inside now…Mama…please,” Thillion begged her mother.
“I…Thillion, what do I do now?” her mother sobbed, “Your father…my love, left me here…to face this world…alone…”
Thillion bowed her head. “I don’t know, Mama, I don’t know…We have to stay together. We have to keep breathing, Mama…” Her mother nodded, drew a deep breath, and stood. Clutching the cloak around her, she offered Thillion a hand up. “Come let us go inside and warm ourselves.”
That night, Thillion fell asleep with her mother curled tightly around her. That was the last night Thillion was ever truly safe again.
